The Rochester A's got off to a slow start but made up for it with a strong finish as it beat Winona 6-5 in American Legion baseball on Thursday night.
The A's allowed four unearned runs in the second inning as they fell behind 5-0. But they turned things around by scoring four runs of their own in the fifth inning and rode 15 hits in the win.
"This was a big win for us," A's coach Todd Stellmaker said. "It was a gutty win all the way around. We looked flat early. Our defense let us down in a couple of spots that led to four unearned runs in the second inning. And their starting pitcher was over-matching our hitters. But we kept grinding and eventually broke through."
Travis Rittenhouse had three hits for the A's. Jaecan Fratzke, Luca Martini, Dalton Schuder, Keith Rittenhouse and Aidan Merges had two apiece.
Kyle Wiesner had a big two-run single in the fifth inning for the A's.
Fratzke had a bases-loaded single in the seventh inning to bring home the winning run.
The A's are 5-1 in First District play, 7-6 overall.
