EDEN PRAIRIE — The Rochester A's split a pair of games at the Gopher Classic in American Legion baseball on Sunday to finish the tournament with a 3-2 record.
The A's started the day by defeating Park Center 5-2 and then suffered a 9-4 setback to Sartell.
"It was a weird day for us offensively," A's coach Todd Stellmaker said. "In the two games we played on Sunday, we combined for nine runs in the first inning and then our bats went silent for the rest of the day after that."
The A's scored all of their runs in the two games in the first inning each time.
Keith Rittenhouse highlighted a five-run first inning against Park Center with a three-run double. Luca Martini was in control on the mound as he limited Park Center to two earned runs on four hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out eight.
The A's jumped out to a 4-0 lead after half an inning against Sartell. But Sartell would scored the final nine runs of the game, including four in the fourth when it took the lead for good.
Travis Rittenhouse and Ryan Newman were both 3-for-4 for the A's against Sartell while Martini had a pair of hits.
"In all honesty, just getting out of this game healthy was a big thing for us," Stellmaker said. "We didn't have a chance to advance out of our pool and due to vacations we had used up all of our pitchers. The boys played hard and had fun."
