No. 1 Breck, bye: The top-seeded Mustangs (7-1) suffered their only loss this season in Week 6, a 14-0 setback against St. Agnes, the No. 7-ranked team in Class AA. Breck will be a tough beat for anyone in the section, possibly in the state. The Mustangs allow just 7.1 points per game and have four shutouts this year.
No. 2 Cannon Falls, bye: The No. 7-ranked Bombers (6-1) are the defending section champions. They're outscoring opponents by an average of 34.6 to 15.0, the latter number being skewed by the 45 points they gave up to No. 4-ranked Stewartville in the season finale. The Bombers are led by a stout defense and a balanced running game that is led by senior Trenton Matthies, but thrives on using as many six or seven ball carriers in a game.
No. 6 St. Croix Lutheran at No. 3 Minneapolis Roosevelt: SCL is 1-7, Roosevelt 3-5. Both teams have struggled to score this season; SCL averages 12.1 ppg, while Roosevelt averages just 10.0. SCL has scored a total of seven points in its past three games. These teams have not met this season.
No. 5 Richfield at No. 4 Lake City: Richfield has won just once, beating St. Croix Lutheran in the season opener 49-34. Since then the Spartans have been shut out twice and held to a touchdown or less on four occasions. Lake City (3-5) has lost four consecutive games since a 3-1 start. The Tigers' offense did get back on track in a regular season-ending loss to P-E-M on Wednesday. QB Justin Wohlers passed for 207 yards and three TDs, while Jake Wohlers had seven catches for 92 yards, and Ben Nutt ran for 125 yards.
