AUSTIN — Grand Meadow could get nothing started against unbeaten Mountain Lake.

And the Wolverines? They got going in a hurry and never stopped, all of it en route to an easy 42-12 win over the Superlarks in the Nine-Man state football quarterfinals at Art Hass Stadium on Friday.

For Grand Meadow, which was in the state tournament for the first time since 2016 when it had its final of four straight state titles, the loss ended its season at 10-2. Mountain Lake — the top ranked team in Nine Man — is 12-0.

Grand Meadow entered the game hot, coming off a 35-0 win over Houston in the Section 1 Nine-Man title game.

But facing the Wolverines, who average 50 points per game and allow just 11 per game, was a different matter. Grand Meadow didn’t get on the board until 5:01 was left in regulation. That’s when Dusty Copley finally ended the Superlarks’ drought with a 48-yard touchdown run. Luke Speer recovered a fumble and found the end zone on the play about two minutes later to complete Grand Meadow’s scoring.

Mountain Lake was the opposite. It built a 20-0 first-half lead and upped that to 35-0 by the end of three quarters.

Quarterback Abraham Stoesz was a big difference maker for the Wolverines. He was in on five of his team’s six touchdowns. He had runs of 35, 1, 45 and 5 yards for touchdowns. He also completed a 22-yard pass for a TD.

Considered a great dual-threat quarterback, he helped Mountain Lake finish with 311 yards rushing. Stoesz had 205 of those yards.

Copley led Grand Meadow offensively with 68 yards rushing. Quaterback Evan Oehlke had 36 rushing yards and 49 yards passing with two interceptions.

Grand Meadow figures to be even stronger next season as it is loaded with underclassmen.
