CANNON FALLS – Layke Moger turned a pressure-filled situation into a celebration at Cannon Golf Club on Wednesday.

The Rochester Mayo senior earned his first-ever trip to the Class AAA boys golf state tournament in his last opportunity to do so.

Moger won a three-man sudden-death playoff by making a birdie on the first extra hole, to eliminate Lakeville North’s Ben Wagenbach and Farmington’s Kyle Berg. He advances to the Class AAA state meet at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids, June 11-12.

Moger shot a 4-over-par 75 in Tuesday’s opening round of the section meet, then followed than with a 9-over 80 on Wednesday. That left him in a three-way tie for eighth place with Wagenbach and Berg, both of whom shot 77 on Tuesday and 78 on Wednesday.

The section championship team qualifies for the state meet, as do the top five individuals not on the title-winning team. Lakeville South captured the team title with a two-round total of 605, good for a nine-shot win over runner-up Lakeville North.

Mayo finished third (633), led by Moger’s 155 two-round total. Spartans’ sophomore Nathan Meyer missed the playoff by one shot, finishing at 156. Jack Hartert (158) and Ethan Norman (164) rounded out the Spartans’ scoring.

Other individuals who earned state-meet berths include North’s Joey Thomas, the section medalist with consecutive rounds of 72, for a 144 total; Hastings’ Terry Kuhn (73-74—147), Winona’s Matt Turner (78-73—151) and Northfield’s Nathan Stevens (78-73—151).
