Section 1A Golf Meet

Southland’s Max Schmitz lines up a putt on the 10th green during the Section 1A boys golf championship Thursday at Willow Creek Golf Course in Rochester.

Section One, Class A Meet

What happened: Southland sophomore Max Schmitz earned his first-ever trip to the Class A state meet by earning medalist honors on Thursday at the Section 1A meet. Schmitz shot a final-round 77 at par-70 Willow Creek Golf Course in Rochester to give him a two-round total of 150, good for a 2-shot victory over runner-up Jake Fishbaugher of Fillmore Central. Faribault Bethlehem Academy won the team championship with a two-round score of 687. That was 26 strokes better than runner-up Blooming Prairie.

What it means: Faribault B.A. has qualified for the state meet as a team. Schmitz, Fishbaugher, Blooming Prairie's Kollyn Alwes, GMLO's Grant Vikre and Hayfield's Keegan Bronson all qualified as individuals.

Meet notes: Schmitz, Fishbaugher and FBA's Khrystjan Peterson (154) were the only golfers in the 44-player field to finish in the 150s. ... Peterson is a state-meet veteran. He placed seventh in 2017 and was the state runner-up last year. ... Bronson also qualified for state last year. ... Schmitz's opening-round 73 on Tuesday was the best round of the tournament.

Up next: The Class A state meet is set for June 11-12 at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker.
