Section One, Class A Meet
What happened: Fillmore Central swept the gold medals at the Section One, Class A girls golf meet, which wrapped up Thursday with the final round at Willow Creek Golf Course in Rochester. The Falcons won their sixth consecutive section championship, and Fillmore Central senior Madison Scheevel earned section medalist honors for the first time in her career.
What it means: The Falcons, who won a state title in 2016, will play at state for a sixth consecutive year. Caledonia golfers ate up four of the five state-meet berths for individuals out of Section 1A — Jenna Wiebke, Gina Steele, Vanessa Hawkins and Ally Jilek all qualified as individuals, as did Hayfield's Macy Holtan.
Meet notes: Scheevel will play in the sixth state golf meet of her high school career. She has qualified for state every year since her seventh-grade season. ... She was remarkably consistent throughout the section meet, shooting a birdie, par or bogey on 33 of the 36 holes. ... Fillmore Central has never finished lower than third at state. ... The Falcons' depth showed up Thursday, and was the difference for them, as No. 6 golfer Courtney Hershberger cut 14 strokes off her first-round score. ... Scheevel (163) and Wiebke (168) were the only golfers to break 170 in the section meet.
Up next: The Class A state meet is set for June 11-12 at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker.
