WACONIA — Rochester John Marshall battled back after a slow start, but couldn't come back all the way in a season-opening 5-2 non-conference girls hockey loss at Waconia on Saturday.
Waconia led 1-0 after one period and 3-0 after two.
JM (0-1-0) got going on the first shift of the third period, when freshman Halle Squires scored her first varsity goal, unassisted, just 29 seconds into the period. The Rockets got within 3-2 six minutes later on Katherine Wheeler's first varsity goal, with an assist from Greta Freed.
But Waconia answered with two goals over the final seven minutes to pull away.
Anysia Heimer played a strong game in goal for JM, making 24 saves.
JM is back in action Thursday at Woodbury at 7 p.m.
