LOURDES RIDES DEFENSE TO TIE

Lourdes, paced by Ben Borgmeier and the rest of the team’s defense, managed a 0-0 overtime tie with traditional rival Benilde-St. Margaret’s on Monday night in boys non-conference soccer at Rochester Regional Stadium.

The teams played through a pair of downpours, even after the game had been moved up two hours due to predicted storms.

BSM outshot Lourdes 6-3 in the first half. But Lourdes was much better after that and the teams each had four shots in the second half. Lourdes had two solid chances to score in the two 5-minute overtimes, but came up empty both times. BSM didn’t have a shot on goal in overtime.

Lourdes coach Tom Kane was pleased with his team’s defense.

“We had another good night from the senior backline of Isaac Hensrud, Jackson Knoepke, Matt Steinmetz, and Ben Borgmeier — who had an exceptional night,” Kane said.

Lourdes also got excellent play from its goalie, Jaxon Hopkins. He had 10 saves.

Lourdes is 3-2-1 overall and plays again tonight, hosting Lake City.
