WEST HANDS MAYO FIRST LEAGUE LOSS
It was a tough assignment for the Rochester Mayo boys soccer team, and it just missed against powerful Mankato West, losing 1-0 on Thursday night at Mayo.
It was the Spartans first league loss of the season (2-1-0).
The Scarlets got the game's only goal in the first half, 10 minutes in. West shot from 20 yards out, the ball was misjudged by Mayo and it landed in the Spartans net.
Otherwise, Mayo dominated the game, outshooting West 18-4.
"But we were unlucky, hitting the crossbar and the goal posts at least five times," Mayo coach Charles Abboud said. "Our defense stood firm."
Abboud sung the praises of midfielders Kellen Claton and Jonathan Wright and striker Miguel Zuniga.
Mayo is 3-3-0 overall.

CENTURY TIES OWATONNA
Century scored in a hurry on Thursday night, but the Panthers couldn't get a win out of that. Instead, they settled for a 2-2 overtime tie with Big Nine Conference foe Owatonna.
"Two quick goals in the first 10 minutes proved to be too little for us to hold onto the win," Century coach Hal Houghton said.
Century's goals came from Max Sargent and Rivaldo Pena.
Houghton was elated with defender Markus Melsness.
"(Melsness) came up huge for us defensively," Houghton said.
Century is 2-0-1 in the Big Nine and 3-2-1 overall.
