Panthers shut out Lakeville South

LAKEVILLE -- Century sophomore Max Comfere scored on a header off a corner kick midway through the first half on Thursday, and Panthers sophomore goalie Charlie Odell made that lone goal stand up as the Panthers claimed a 1-0 road win to open the 2019 season.

Century head coach Hal Houghton praised his young goalie. "He had a great game in net, coming up with several big saves to preserve the win," he said. "Rivaldo Pena, Max Sargent, Josh Christensen all played well in the win, and defender Markus Melsness was outstanding."

Lakeville North 1, Mayo 0

LAKEVILLE — Mayo had a nice first showing but still lost 1-0 to Lakeville North on Thursday night in non-conference boys soccer.

The teams were in a scoreless tie heading into intermission. Lakeville North got the game's only score on a corner kick, with 10 minutes left in regulation.

Mayo coach Charles Abboud liked what he saw from his team, which also lost to Lakeville North in the Section 1AA title game last year.

"The teams were about equal and victory could have gone either way," Abboud said. "I was very satisfied with the Spartans' performance. I had some concerns about the newly revamped goalkeeping and defensive setup because of graduation of the six seniors who formed an outstanding defense that had registered 13 shutouts in 19 games in the 2018 season. But Grahame Grinnell in goal, and senior defender captain Daniel Chang and junior defenders Zack Spindler-Krage, Adam McPhail and Luis Lopez stood their ground and had a very good game, limiting the chances of the Panthers to two shots at goal in the whole game. "

Abboud also credited Kellen Claton and Kyle Doppler with strong games in midfield.

Mayo plays at East Ridge on Saturday.
