NORTHFIELD ELIMINATES CENTURY
NORTHFIELD -- Northfield scored 17 minutes into the first half on a penalty kick and went on to beat Century 3-1 in the Section 1AA boys soccer quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Century tied the scored late in the second half when Max Sargent passed a ball into the box that created chaos before sophomore Noah Oachs put the bouncing ball past the Northfield goalie.
Eight minutes later Northfield went ahead for good with a goal and then Century allowed one more late in regulation when it had pushed its players forward, looking for the tie.
Noah Gjervik, Luke Corrigan and Hunter Smith all went down with injuries in the game.
Houston said his team had a number of chances to score in the first half, but couldn’t convert.
“It was a tough ending for an enthusiastic and hard-working group,” said Century coach Hal Houghton, whose team finished 7-9-1 overall.

SPARTANS TOP NEW PRAGUE, ADVANCE TO SEMIFINALS
The Mayo boys soccer team, seeded No. 2 in the Section 1AA tournament, had little trouble with No. 7 seed New Prague on Tuesday. The Spartans found the net early and often and claimed a 5-1 victory.
Mayo scored twice in the first two minutes. Ben Persons fed Kellen Claton for the first goal, and one minute later, Kyle Doppler made a long run from 40 yards out, exchanged passes with Jonathan Wright and then found the net.
Wright then scored two goals in the last five minutes of the first half, with assists from Gio Castillo and Noah See as the Spartans took a 4-1 lead into the intermission and were never threatened.
Claton scored the fifth Spartan goal from the penalty spot midway through the second half.
The Spartans will host No. 3 seed Northfield on Thursday at 7 p.m.

SCHAEFFER TOO MUCH FOR KOMETS
Ebube Mordi had two goals and David Choung had two assists as No. 9 seed Schaeffer Academy beat No. 16 seed Kasson-Mantorville 5-0 in the first round of the Section 1A boys soccer playoffs on Tuesday.
Schaeffer got four goals in the first half, one in the second.
The Lions move to 6-7-1 and play at No. 8 seed St. Charles at on Thursday.
