Final Score: Mayo 2, Northfield 0

What happened: Mayo grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first 3 minutes, added to it 21 minutes later, then fairly easily hung on for a 2-0 Section 1AA semifinal win.

Records: Mayo is 9-4-5, Northfield finishes 11-2-2

What it means: Mayo moves on to play No. 4 Lakeville South in the section finals Tuesday, the winner moving on to state. It is Mayo’s second straight appearance in the section finals. Last year it played Lakeville North in the championship and lost.

Game notes: Mayo’s goals came from Jonathan Wright at 37:07 of the first half, then Kellen Calton at 16:32 of the first half on a penalty kick.

Up next: No. 2 seed Mayo plays in the Section 1AA finals at 7 p.m. Tuesday, hosting No. 4 seed Lakeville South.

KEY PLAYERS:

Jonathan Wright, Mayo: The senior forward quickly got things going in the right direction for Mayo, banging home a shot from 20 yards out 3 minutes in, turning on a bouncing ball.

Zach Spindler-Krage, Mayo: For the second straight time against Northfield, the junior defender's job was to shadow Northfield star forward Pascal Cogan. And for the second straight time, Cogan was held scoreless.
