Katherine Homme is in her first year on the varsity for the Century swimming and diving team and she made a big splash during the Section One, Class AA girls swimming and diving meet on Friday at Rochester Recreational Center.

Homme, a freshman, won a pair of individual section championships in the 200 and 500 freestyle events to earn state berths in both. She also was part of Century's runner-up 400 freestyle relay to earn a third state berth.

"It's just crazy and amazing," Homme said. "I wasn't expecting to do this well."

Northfield was the team winner of the nine-team event with 390 points. Farmington was a close second with 384 and Century was third with 367. Mayo placed sixth and John Marshall was ninth.

"Obviously we want to get first," Century senior Megan Bauerle said of the team finish. "But we had some really awesome races in there and were really happy how the meet went."

Century had state qualifiers in five of the 12 events. The Panthers had two individual qualifiers and two relays. Mayo had one state qualifier.

Homme posted personal bests as she won the 200 in 1:54.93 and the 500 in 5:07.87.

"Mindset, I think. Just not being afraid and just going out confident," Homme said.

She said the 500 freestyle is her favorite event.

"It's just a good one that I get to push myself constantly," Homme said.

Homme also pushed Mayo's Natalie Boorjian in the 500 freestyle. Boorjian, like Homme, is a freshman who is in her first varsity season. Boorjian earned a state berth in the 500 freestyle by placing second.

"I'm just excited to swim at state; I've never done it before," Boorjian said.

Boorjian posted a personal-best time of 5:13.95 in the 500 freestyle.

"I wanted to go out fast," Boorjian said. "I love racing Katie (Homme) because she's such a fierce competitor and we're such good friends in club (swimming), so I'm glad I got to race her. She pushed me to do my best."

Century junior Liliann Linden also won an individual section title. She earned her first individual state berth by winning the 100 backstroke in 59.22.

"It was amazing," Linden said. "It was really cool to just have my whole team support me. It was a great race."

Century opened the meet with a flourish as Emily Garrison, Morgan Kram, Linden and Bauerle teamed up to win the 200 medley relay in 1:48.70.

"Our medley relay crushed it, winning first, that was really exciting to be a part of that," Linden said.

Bauerle just missed qualifying in two individual events as she was third in both the 50 and 100 freestyle. But she was delighted to be apart of two relays that were state qualifiers.

"It was super fun with the relays," Bauerle said. "I like being on a team event more so it was nice. You get four people (to state) instead of one."

The 400 freestyle relay, the last event of the meet, was very close and Century was just behind Farmington and nipped Northfield for second. The Century foursome of Linden, Alexa Kelly, Homme and Bauerle posted a time of 3:35.85 to smash the school record.

"It was crazy and so fun," Bauerle said. "All of us dropped time, and our school record, we broke it by around three seconds."

Kram, a senior, just missed an individual state berth as she was third in the 100 breaststroke.

The Section 1AA state qualifiers advance to the Class AA state meet next Thursday-Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

"I don't know what we'll do at state, since I haven't done it before, but I'm definitely excited," Homme said.
