LOOKING BACK AT 2018
CLASS AA: Century captured the Section 1AA title last season as the Panthers nipped Farmington and Lakeville North in the section meet. Mayo placed sixth in the eight-team section and John Marshall was eighth. The three Rochester schools — Century, John Marshall and Mayo — hope to have more of an impact at the state level this year. None of the three were able to place in the top 16 at the state meet and score any team points. Century did manage to qualify a pair of relays and three individuals to the state meet.
CLASS A: Northfield won the Section 1A team title while Mankato West was the runner-up. Red Wing was sixth in the 11-team meet and Austin was 10th. Red Wing had a bigger impact at the Class A state meet. Red Wing had a pair of top-six finishes at state as Cecelia DeJong was third in the 100 butterfly and the 200 medley relay placed sixth. That earned the Wingers 42 points at the state meet and a tie for 14th place. Red Wing has four state qualifiers back in senior Grace O'Brien, juniors DeJong and Sammy Kriese and sophomore Teegan Beyers. Austin does not return any state qualifiers.
LOOKING AT 2019
Head co-coaches: Dale and Megan Magnuson.
Assistant coaches: Joscelyn Martin, Lori Rogers, Brett Maronde (diving), Allison Bjork.
Last season: The Panthers finished 8-1 in dual meets and went on to win both the Big Nine Conference meet and Section 1AA championships.
Top Returners: Avery Severson (All-Conference), Liliann Linden (All-Conference, state qualifier), Megan Bauerle (All-Conference, state qualifier), Morgan Kram (All-Conference, state qualifier), Carly Tautges (All-Conference, state qualifier), Liana Wiepert (All-Conference, state qualifier), Paige Patten (All-Conference), Mia Cuccio (state qualifier), Kenzie Below, Molly Engel, Ella Killinger.
Top newcomers: Emily Garrison, Katie Homme, Briget Harms, Paige Manguson, Elena Kesselring.
2019 outlook: The Panthers should be primed for a strong year. They have five seniors back who earned relay state berths a year ago in Wiepert, Kram, Bauerle, Tautges and Cuccio. Junior Liliann Linden and sophomore Avery Severson also earned state berths. The Panthers also have good numbers which will make them a deep squad. They should be in contention for Big Nine and section titles. "This is a great situation because of the diversity of talent across the team," Dale Magnuson said. "With several newcomers to the team this year, we have more depth in all events than we have had in a long time."
Coach's quote: "We are very excited about this season with all the new and returning athletes on the team," Dale Magnuson said. "It looks like we have a lot of very talented swimmers and divers who will be very strong for several years to come."

Top newcomers: Shannon Penny, Ashley Villar, Mackenzie Swihart, Amanda Kuester.
2019 outlook: The Rockets are still in a building mode heading into the season. Junior Cassidy George is one swimmer to build around as she was All-Big Nine a year ago. Coach Paul Bachman said "our youth and team atmosphere" will be strengths for the Rockets. John Marshall has some quality, but will be lacking in overall depth. "We have a couple of good swimmers in every event," Bachman said, "but to be good you need to have four good swimmers and divers in every event." The Rockets will try to build to the postseason in hopes of having some state qualifiers this season.
Coach’s quote: "The girls have looked very good at practice so far, and have stayed on task," Bachman said. "I am looking forward to our intersquad meet to see how many of the new girls react to swimming so many events in so little time."

"Last year did not end as we had hoped," coach Juliet Parlette said. "This year is about redemption." Parlette said the Spartans have "some older swimmers that are great leaders." And despite having a lot of varsity experience, Mayo has a young squad overall. The team has a modest six seniors and among those Carlstrom and Johnson were All-Big Nine last year. Mayo should be able to score points in all of the different strokes.
Coach's quote: "Our work ethic and team unity will hopefully bring much success," Juliete Parlette said. "We are strong in all the events."
