Big Nine Conference Boys Tennis Meet

Century's Varun Iyer cruised into the semifinals of the Class AA state tournament on Thursday at the University of Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

MINNEAPOLIS – Varun Iyer’s hopes of winning a state singles title are very much alive.

The Century senior, who’s ranked third in the state, breezed through the first two rounds of the Class AA state tournament at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center on Thursday.

Iyer won his first-round match 6-2, 6-4, then won 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. It set No. 3 seed Iyer up for an 8 a.m. meeting with No. 2 seed Max Zagrebelny of Eagan in Friday’s semifinals.

Iyer is trying to become the second straight Rochester player to win a state singles title. Mayo graduate Sebastian Vile won it all last year.

Mayo’s Simon Kennel lost his first-round singles match Thursday, then bounced back in the consolation quarterfinals with a win. The senior will play in Friday’s 8 a.m. consolation semifinals.

Century’s doubles combination of Josh Christensen and Alec Sargent won their first-round match with ease, then had the nasty assignment of taking on No. 1 seed Sourabh Terakanambi and Nisal Liyanage of Eastview. Christensen and Sargent, both sophomores, lost 6-2, 6-2, eliminating them from the tournament.

Onigkeit/Eckels advance to semis

In the Class A tournament at Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Lourdes’ combination of Jonathan Onigkeit and Thomas Eckel safely made it through the first two rounds.

No. 4-seed Onigkeit/Eckel served extremely well in the first round and quarterfinals to move into Friday’s semifinals. The Eagles duo was pushed to a tie-breaker in both opening sets and emerged a 7-3 winner each time before recording one-sided wins in the second sets.

In Friday’s 8 a.m. semifinals, Onigkeit/Eckel will take on St. Paul Academy’s unseeded Liam Lynch and Luka Shaker-Chek. That duo was a surprise winner in the quarterfinals over the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Breck’s David Gorman and Zach Piehl, emerging in three sets.
