Class A State Track

Plainview-Elgin-Millville’s Jacob Munsch clears the bar on a pole vault attempt during the Class A State Track and Field Meet on Friday, June 7, 2019, at Hamline University in St. Paul.

ST. PAUL – Likely considered Class A’s top boys pole vaulter the last two years, Plainview-Elgin-Millville senior Jacob Munsch made it official that he’s the best on Friday night.

Munsch, who didn’t participate in the state meet last year due to an injury, cleared 15 feet on Friday to win the event.

The 3,200 was the only boys and girls race to be a final Friday. Three boys field events and three girls field events were finals. The meet concludes today.

Munsch won the pole vault with relative ease.

Stewartville’s Trevor Schaefer was fourth (14-3) and Pine Island’s Jarod White fifth (14-0).

Nice timing for Stewartville’s Byrne

Stewartville senior Shane Byrne came through with a personal best on Friday in the shot put.

Byrne’s throw of 56-feet-3½ won the event. Byrne had entered with a Section 1A winning throw of 52-11 ¾. A year ago, Byrne failed to place at state when he had a throw of 42-10 ¾.

Second place on Friday belonged to all-around Breck athletic star David Roddy. He threw it 55-9 ¼.

Byrne will try to snag his second state title today, in the discus.

• The Ping sisters from Winona Cotter were their usual dominant selves in the 3,200.

Eighth-grader Lauren Ping reeled in her second straight state title in the eight-lap race. She finished it in 10:39.34. In second place was sophomore sister Grace, in 10:50.19. Zumbrota-Mazeppa eighth-grader Natasha Sortland finished fourth.

• Makenna Theobald and Lindsey Root each managed a fourth place. Stewartville’s Theobald got hers in the discus, while St. Charles’ Root got hers in the long jump.
