Section 1A True Team Track Meet

Section 1A True Team Track Meet

St. Charles’ Isaac Davidson, pictured above competing in the long jump at the Section 1A True Team track and field meet, placed seventh at the True Team state meet on Saturday to help the Saints win the first-ever state championship in school history.

STILLWATER — St. Charles, for the first time in its athletics history, is a state champion.

The Saints boys track and field team got that done on Saturday, winning the Class A True Team state title at Stillwater High School.

St. Charles had been hovering near state title ground in the True Team the last two years, finishing fourth last season and third the season before that. Saturday, it got all the way over the top.

“We knew we had a really good shot at winning it going in,” St. Charles sixth-year coach Eric Klein said. “That was the conversation we had with the kids the week leading up to it. But this wasn’t something that was just achieved by this team and its coaches. It was a community effort. I can’t say enough about the support we’ve gotten.”

The biggest competition the Saints faced at state came from some extremely familiar faces. This was a state meet dominated by Section One, with St. Charles landing first with 573.5 points, Lewiston-Altura second (543) and Lanesboro/Fillmore Central/Mabel-Canton third (504). In sixth place was another Section One team, Rushford-Peterson/Houston (449.5).

“Never in this meet have we seen four of the top six teams come from one section,” Klein said. “All of the coaches in our area feel like Section One is where it’s at in Minnesota track and field.”

It had been Lewiston-Altura that had won the state-qualifying Section 1A True Team meet just over a week ago, with St. Charles finishing second and L/FC/MC third.

But this time the Saints got the better of it as they used especially strong performances in the distance races to propel them. The 3,200 was the best example of that, with St. Charles’ Axel Daood finishing third and teammate Andrew O’Hara fifth. Daood was also fourth in the 1,600. In the 800, St. Charles’ Korrigan Diercks finished as a champion, in 2:03.50.

St. Charles also got a first-place finish from Jett Thoreson in the pole vault (13 feet), and a third and a fifth in the high jump from Dalton Balcome and Isaac Davidson, respectively. Davidson also placed seventh in the long jump.

But if ever a state tournament calls for an absolute team effort, this meet is it. And the Saints delivered, getting key contributions from a bunch of athletes.

“Our boys won the state title because they went out there and got it,” Klein said.

• Lewiston-Altura got big points from its jumpers. Marcus Weaver won the high jump and Evan Daley was second, both clearing 6-2. Daley won the long jump (21-1) and the triple jump (40-11 1/4), and Weaver was second in the triple jump (40-10).

GMLOKS girls third

In the girls Class A True Team meet Saturday, Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Kingsland/Southland (463 points) finished third and fellow Section One team Lanesboro/Fillmore Central/Mabel-Canton (448.5) was fourth.

Minnewaska won the meet with 549.5 points.

It was a big day for GMLOKS’ Anika Reiland, as she was first in the 200 (26.47) and second in the 100 (12.98) and 400 (1:00.93). Hailey Hindt also starred for GMLOKS, finishing first in the 100 hurdles (16.15) and third in the 300 hurdles (47.59).

LFCMC’s Emma Breitsprecher won the 300 hurdles (46.62) and was second in the 100 hurdles (16.21), and teammate Sydney Taylor won the discus (110-9).
