First-year Rochester Mayo boys hockey head coach Matt Notermann said prior to the season that the Spartans have some young players who are ready to step in and make an impact.
A handful of them proved that on Saturday.
Sophomores Sam Jacobson and Jacob Brown combined for three of Mayo's four points, and junior goalie Tate Cothern made 28 saves as Mayo held off rival Rochester Century for a 2-1 Big Nine Conference victory at Graham Arena.
Brown assisted on both of Mayo's goals, while Jacobson scored the Spartans' first goal and assisted on the game winner just minutes later by senior Nate Williamson, who anchors the line with sophomores Brown and Jacobson.
Cothern, the younger brother of former Mayo goalie Max Cothern, allowed just one goal -- an unassisted short-handed score by Century senior Isaiah Huber 6:35 into the second period.
That was a wakeup call for the Spartans, who answered Huber's goal 2:22 later when Jacobson scored the first of his career, with an assist from Brown, to tie the score 1-1.
Exactly four minutes later, Brown and Jacobson set up Williamson for what turned out to be the game winner.
Cothern took care of the rest for Mayo (2-1-0 overall), stopping 11 shots in the third period to preserve the victory and improve to 2-0-0 as a starter.
Century goalie Conor Cozik helped keep his team in the game, making 22 saves for the Panthers (2-1-0).
"It could have gone either way," Notermann said. "Tate made multiple big saves for us and the line of Williamson, Jacobson and Brown earned both goals."
Century saw its eight-game winning streak against Mayo snapped, but the Panthers still hold a 34-26-2 lead in the all-time series between the teams, who are scheduled to meet again on Feb. 25 at Graham Arena I.
