Packers 2, Mayo 1

Austin's Mikiah Rumsey scored a goal in the third period to snap a tie and the Packers went on to nip Mayo 2-1 in Big Nine Conference girls hockey on Saturday.

The game was the season opener for Mayo.

"We played very well considering we started two days later than our peers and had a practice lost to a snow day," Mayo coach Mike McCormack said. "Our younger veterans have stepped up their game and we coaches were very impressed with our rookies."

Elizabeth Arendt scored Mayo lone goal in the second period. Goalie Alivia Haakenson stopped 19 of the 21 shots she faced.

Century 4, Winona 1

WINONA — Collette Barry scored twice and Kailey Birkestrand and Daelyn Williams once each as Century rolled to a 4-1 win over Winona in Big Nine Conference action Saturday.

The Panthers were excellent start to finish, continually working together. That led to them getting an astronomical 90 shots on goal.

“The puck movement by the girls was exceptional, and I'm very excited about the depth we have where we can confidently play three lines,” Century coach Tom Aney said. “It is going to be great watching this team develop and improve as the season progresses.”

Goalie Abi Connors had 19 saves for Century.

Gentry Academy 9, Lourdes 0

Lourdes ran into a tough foe in its season opener as Gentry Academy posted a 9-0 non-conference win in girls hockey on Saturday at Graham Areana.

Lourdes was limited to seven shots on goal in the contest, and a combined three in the first two periods.

Eagles goalie Ida Huber had a busy night as she faced 56 shots and made 47 saves.

Audrey Jackson and Cara Sajevic had two goals each for Gentry.
