KASSON — Dodge County struck early in the first period, then early again in the third period.
That was all the offense they needed as senior goalie Sky Hughes stopped 23 of the 24 shots she faced in a tightly contested 2-1 girls hockey victory against Simley on Saturday afternoon at the Dodge County Ice Arena.
McKenna Freerksen scored just 43 seconds into the game, staking the Wildcats (7-4-0) to a lead they’d never relinquish.
That’s how the score remained until the start of the third period, when Lyndi Schubert scored on the first shift, 29 seconds into the period.
Simley spoiled Hughes’ shutout bid on an goal by Ella Tuccitto with 40 seconds to play in the game.
Anna Braun and Elizabeth Fagerlind recorded one assist each for the Wildcats, who host Gentry Academy at 7 p.m. Thursday.

RED WING — Tatum Zylka had a hand in all but one of her team’s goals, recording a hat trick and two assists as Red Wing beat Winona 6-1 in a Big Nine Conference girls hockey game. Allison Roe added two goals and two assists for the Wingers, and Leigha Kitzmann had 19 saves.
Aliya Gricius stopped 49 shots for the Winhawks, whose goal was scored by Avery Engbrecht.
