Junior hockey: St. Louis leaves Ice Hawks singing the Blues

The Rochester Ice Hawks dropped a two-game set to the St. Louis Jr. Blues on Saturday and Sunday at the Rochester Recreation Center, falling 8-1 on Saturday and 5-0 on Sunday.

The Rochester Ice Hawks dropped a two-game set to the St. Louis Jr. Blues on Saturday and Sunday at the Rochester Recreation Center, falling 8-1 on Saturday and 5-0 on Sunday.

Rochester Mayo grad Austyn Renn scored for the Hawks in Saturday's game, a goal that pulled Rochester within 2-1 after one period. But, St. Louis answered with two goals in the second and four more in the third to pull away for the victory.

Andrew Gates and Ryley Cook had an assist each on Renn's goal and Sawyer Schmidt made 41 saves in the loss.

Five players scored once each for the Jr. Blues on Sunday, and St. Louis goalie Zach Young recorded an 18-save shutout. Schmidt stopped 37 of the 41 shots he faced in the first 45:26 of play, and Bailey Schmitz made 12 saves on 13 shots the rest of the way in his first appearance of the season.

Rochester (0-6-0 overall) plays host to Willmar at 7:05 p.m. Friday.
