L/P boys win first round game

LYLE — Early dunks by the Lyle/Pacelli boys set the tone for a lopsided win in Tuesday's play-in game of the Class A, Section One, West Subsection basketball tournament.

Lyle/Pacelli, the eighth seed, led by 16 points at halftime against ninth-seeded Alden-Conger and stayed in control the rest of the way. The L/P Athletics added to their lead in the second half for a 69-38 win.

Three players scoring in double figures highlighted the domination displayed by the Athletics in the rout of the A-C Knights. This was also the inaugural post-season win for L/P coach Casey Anderson.

Skylar Meyer led the way for the Athletics with another double-double as he scored a game-high 26 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Ryan Rust and Carter Guthmiller also scored in double figures for the home team.

"Skylar started out the game with a rebound and a dunk for us, which kind of got the energy going right away," Anderson said. "He also had seven steals, so it was a good night for our press. The kids capitalized off the steals and scored in transition."

Right out of the gate, the L/P boys got their offense rolling and jumped out to a 17-3 lead in the opening six minutes. Leading the whole way, the Athletics put on their best performance of the season.

Meyer had a total of three dunks on the night and also hit a trio of three-pointers as the Athletics are moving on in the Section 1A West tournament. Alden-Conger finished the season with a 4-19 record.

Rust had had solid night in the paint with 18 points and seven rebounds. Guthmiller had his highest scoring output of the season with 10 points. Guthmiller and Stephen Juenger added outside balance as they each connected from the beyond the three-point line.

"Carter scored all of his points in the second half and we pulled away," Anderson said. "The guys played well and were patient on offense. We came out running and just kept at it. It was nice to win our last home game of the season."

Lyle/Pacelli (9-15) advances to play at top-seeded Goodhue on Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Section 1A West tournament.
