Lacrosse: Rochester girls, boys previews

Head coach: Nikki Anglin, first year. Assistant coaches:Nicky Anderson, Maggie Gibson. 2012 record:4-9.

Season outlook:Team strengths are many returning players who have several years of competitive lacrosse experience, Anglin says. "We are a fast team and a really smart team with several great leaders that know the importance of team play and team offense. The girls on this Mayo team truly enjoy the game and their energy is palpable. They will be fun to watch compete." As for weaknesses, "Transitioning to a new coaching staff can take some time. Players and coaches will have to adjust to this change. Also, we had some fantastic leadership last year from our seniors and that will be difficult to replicate."

Overall outlook:"Lacrosse in Rochester is continuing to grow and develop and with that comes increase in skills, excitement, and competitiveness," Anglin says. "I think this team of Mayo girls is going to have a lot of success this season. Many of our girls are multi-sport athletes and academically are some of the best in the city. This makes for quite a compilation of driven, smart, committed young ladies. We will continue to work hard on our fundamentals, team skills, and will become a better team as the season progresses."

Season outlook: Swenson is "looking forward to a strong year. The team is excited to improve on last year's seven wins," which was an improvement over 2-14 in 2011. Several returning starters are back, including two senior captains Rebecca Lorsung and Sydney Sparks. Other key players are senior Kate Daugherty, juniors Katie Aney, Sheri Hawkins, Lizzie Nordlund and Nicole Philipps. and sophomores MaKenzie Birkestrand, McKenna Bridges, Rachel Christenson, Abby Cunningham, Jessica Dahl.

Overall: "The coaching staff is excited with the talent of this year's team," Swenson continues. "With 30 players out this year the players will have plenty of minutes on the field to show us what they can do. Keys to our season this year will be filling our defensive spots after losing our four starters from last year. Season outloook:McAllister lists as team strengths: Large number of returning players back; high number of young/new players; returning players are fundamentally sound; players are responsive to feedback that will improve skills and are ready to learn from mistakes and achievements. Head coach: Andy Roth, fourth year. Assistant coach:James Alcorn. 2012 record:5-8.

Season outlook:As for strengths, Roth says, "strong leadership in Nick Waara on defense who acts like a coach on the field and is good at directing players during the game. Also, we are solid in goal. Our attacks looks to be strong and will share the ball also, they are able to take advantage of openings they see on the field." For weaknesses, he notes, the Panthers "return only one starting defenseman and two midfielders. As a team it may take some time to come together and learn each others tendencies and our systems."

Overall:"We are a young team with only six seniors and six juniors," Roth says. "It looks like our younger players are talented but we will need to grow as a team throughout the year. As a team we will need to be patient and be sure that we learn from each game throughout the season."
