Lacrosse: Rochester girls, boys previews

MAYO GIRLS

Head coach: Nikki Anglin, first year. Assistant coaches:Nicky Anderson, Maggie Gibson. 2012 record:4-9.

Season outlook:Team strengths are many returning players who have several years of competitive lacrosse experience, Anglin says. "We are a fast team and a really smart team with several great leaders that know the importance of team play and team offense. The girls on this Mayo team truly enjoy the game and their energy is palpable. They will be fun to watch compete." As for weaknesses, "Transitioning to a new coaching staff can take some time. Players and coaches will have to adjust to this change. Also, we had some fantastic leadership last year from our seniors and that will be difficult to replicate."

Overall outlook:"Lacrosse in Rochester is continuing to grow and develop and with that comes increase in skills, excitement, and competitiveness," Anglin says. "I think this team of Mayo girls is going to have a lot of success this season. Many of our girls are multi-sport athletes and academically are some of the best in the city. This makes for quite a compilation of driven, smart, committed young ladies. We will continue to work hard on our fundamentals, team skills, and will become a better team as the season progresses."

CENTURY BOYS

Head coach: Andy Roth, fourth year. Assistant coach:James Alcorn. 2012 record:5-8.

Season outlook:As for strengths, Roth says, "strong leadership in Nick Waara on defense who acts like a coach on the field and is good at directing players during the game. Also, we are solid in goal. Our attacks looks to be strong and will share the ball also, they are able to take advantage of openings they see on the field." For weaknesses, he notes, the Panthers "return only one starting defenseman and two midfielders. As a team it may take some time to come together and learn each others tendencies and our systems."

Overall:"We are a young team with only six seniors and six juniors," Roth says. "It looks like our younger players are talented but we will need to grow as a team throughout the year. As a team we will need to be patient and be sure that we learn from each game throughout the season."
