Legion baseball: Patriots go 1-3 at tournament

ALEXANDRIA — The Rochester Patriots went 1-3 on Saturday at a tournament in Alexandria in American Legion baseball.

ALEXANDRIA — The Rochester Patriots went 1-3 on Saturday at a tournament in Alexandria in American Legion baseball.

The Patriots, despite a 1-2 record, were able to advance out of pool play by winning a tiebreaker. They then lost 15-12 to Hutchinson in the first round of championship pay.

"Overall a good experience" Patriots coach Dutch Heiderscheit said. "We learned some areas in which we need to improve; we had some leads that we didn't hold and hopefully we come out of this better prepared to finish games and do what it takes to win."

The Patriots opened with a 13-2 win over Worthington. Matthew Dravis collected the victory on the mound. Jack Boehm, Caleb Gronholz, Alex Welder, Colton Kitzman and Aaron Macken all had two hits.

Maple Grove doubled up the Patriots 6-3 in the second game as Boehm suffered the loss. Matthew Halverson went 3-for-3 at the plate.

Host Alexandria outscored the Patriots 10-9 in the final round of pool play. Welder suffered the loss.

Caleb Gronholz and Joey Devlin both had two hits.

Hutchinson then won another high-scoring game in the title round. Jared Juth suffered the loss, and he was also 3-for-3 at the plate. Halvorson was 3-for-4 while Welder and Devlin both had two hits.

The Patriots will play at doubleheader at Owatonna starting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
