ELKO -- Matt Meyer struck out a whopping 19 batters and pitched a nine-inning complete game to lead the Rochester Royals past Elko 5-3 in a Section 1B elimination game in amateur baseball on Friday night.
Meyer, a former minor-league pitcher, allowed seven hits. The 34-year-old left-hander walked three and allowed three earned runs in his gem, which extended Rochester's season.
The Royals were scheduled to play at Hampton on Saturday with the winner earning a Class B state berth while the loser will be eliminated.
The Royals (17-11) scored twice in the third to take a 2-1 lead over Elko and then broke a 2-2 with three runs in the top of the sixth.
Jordan Stokes was 1-for-3 with two RBIs for the Royals. Drew Block, who had missed the two-game section series with Miesville due to a birth of his child, went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Sam Warren was also 2-for-4 and scored a run while Matt Stubbs had a hit and an RBI.
Warren, Block and Nick Pearson all hit doubles for the Royals.
Dylan Thomas hit a solo homer for Elko, which was eliminated from section play with the loss.
