HAMPTON -- The Rochester Royals have secured a berth in the Class B state tournament in amateur baseball.
Mitch Brown pitched seven stellar inning to lead the Royals past Hampton 9-2 on Sunday in a game to determine the final Section 1B state tournament qualifier. With the victory, the Royals become the fourth Section 1B team to earn a state berth, joining Miesville, Dundas and Northfield. The Royals will enter the state tourney as the fourth seed from the section.
Brown, who was pitching in the minor leagues a year ago, allowed two unearned runs on seven hits in his seven innings on the mound. He struck out five and walked five. Jaron Christenson followed with two scoreless and hitless innings.
The Royals (18-11) held a narrow 4-2 lead before breaking the game open with two runs in the seventh inning and three more in the top of the ninth.
Matt Stubbs had a huge game at the plate for the Royals. He was 4-for-4 with three doubles, four RBIs and a run scored.
Michael Michalak went 2-for-5 with a double and three runs scored for the Royals. Campbell was 2-for-6 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI while Alex Prindle was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Alex Welder was 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored as the Royals collected 12 hits.
MEYER WHIFFS 19 IN WIN
The Royals had earned their way into Sunday's showdown with Hampton by defeating Elko 5-3 in an elimination game on Friday.
Matt Meyer struck out a whopping 19 batters and pitched a nine-inning complete game to spark the Royals.
Meyer, a former minor-league pitcher, allowed seven hits. The 34-year-old left-hander walked three and allowed three earned runs in his gem, which extended Rochester's season.
The Royals scored twice in the third to take a 2-1 lead over Elko and then broke a 2-2 with three runs in the top of the sixth.
Jordan Stokes was 1-for-3 with two RBIs for the Royals. Drew Block, who had missed the two-game section series with Miesville due to a birth of his child, went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Sam Warren was also 2-for-4 and scored a run while Stubbs had a hit and an RBI.
Warren, Block and Nick Pearson all hit doubles for the Royals.
Dylan Thomas hit a solo homer for Elko, which was eliminated from section play with the loss.
