FERGUS FALLS — Rochester Community and Technical College used a strong passing attack to close its regular season on a winning note, beating Minnesota State-Fergus Falls 34-14 in junior college football on Saturday.
RCTC (6-2) will now travel to Itasca this Saturday for a playoff game in the MCAC state quarterfinals. Fergus Falls finishes the year winless at 0-7.
Justin Lynn was 15-of-21 passing for 151 yards and three touchdowns for the Yellowjackets. The freshman only played in the first half. Dylan VanBoxel played quarterback in the second half for RCTC and was 11-for-15 passing for 141 yards and one touchdown.
The two RCTC quarterbacks combined to complete passes to 16 different receivers. The Yellowjackets also had nine players with a rushing attempt.
In the first half, Lynn threw touchdown passes to Phillip Hillesheim (24 yards), Michael Schimming (11 yards) and Michael Cole (10 yards).
VanBoxel guided the Yellowjackets to a pair of scoring drives in the fourth quarter. The freshman QB scored on a 1-yard run and he later tossed a 5-yard TD pass to Zach Buckeye.
Rashan Elzie caught three passes for 37 yards and he also rushed for a team-high 25 yards on three carries for the Yellowjackets. Hillesheim had three catches for 36 yards while Damario Richards (57) yards, Levi Bulfer (39 yards) and Schimming (33 yards) all caught a pair of passes.
The Yellowjackets had 295 yards passing, but just 60 yards rushing on 23 attempts. Deontavious Smith had two carries for 21 yards.
