Braxton Raymond has lost his battle with cancer.
The 2016 Kasson-Mantorville grad was diagnosed with an anaplastic astrocytoma -- a malignant and inoperable brain tumor -- in August of 2018. He died on Wednesday at the age of 22.
Raymond, a 6-foot-5 guard, was a standout athlete who finished as K-M’s all-time leading scorer in boys basketball. He averaged more than 23 points per game as a senior.
His sister, Tailor, posted about Braxton on a CaringBridge site on Wednesday morning.
"Unfortunately, Braxton passed away this morning," she wrote. "He was surrounded by family. He had a tough battle and fought til the last second. He is one of the strongest people I know. Please pray for him, family, and friends as we grief (sic) the loss of an amazing soul."
Braxton played three years of varsity basketball at Kasson-Mantorville and one at St. Peter. The Raymond family moved to the Kasson-Mantorville School District following his freshman year when his father, Kelly, was hired as the boys basketball coach at K-M. Kelly Braxton had also coached his son on the St. Peter varsity during Braxton's freshman season.
“Braxton is the toughest kid I coached in my 47 years,” Kelly said during an interview with the Post Bulletin in August of 2018.
After he graduated from K-M, Braxton attended Williston (N.D.) State as a freshman where he played basketball for the Division I junior college.
His physical symptoms began in May of 2018, with numbness in his left hand and foot.
He was tested for multiple sclerosis that June and July in Mankato, where his family doctor resides. But his conditions grew steadily worse as his speech, balance and stamina all began to decline. He went to the emergency room at the beginning of August. Then came a biopsy at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, followed by the devastating news of the brain tumor.
“We kind of knew (it was bad),” Kelly Raymond said at the time.
Tailor Raymond posted on the CaringBridge site: "We will post once we know funeral arrangements. The plan will to have it early next week in Rochester/Kasson."
