Jason Bonde has been hired as the women's basketball coach at Rochester Community and Technical College.

Bonde takes over for Steve Hucke, who stepped down following the 2018-19 after spending the last 17 years as the Yellowjackets' head coach. Bonde is very familiar with RCTC basketball, but on the men's side. He spent the last  10 years as an assistant men's coach under head coach Brian LaPlante.

Prior to entering his coaching career, Bonde also played men's basketball for one season back in 2000-2001.

“I would like to thank (RCTC president) Dr. Boyd and (athletic director) Mike Lester for believing in me and giving me this great opportunity," Bonde said. I would also like to thank coach LaPlante for the great 10 years I had coaching by his side. He has prepared me for an opportunity like this. He has been a great friend and mentor over the years. I am glad that I am still here at RCTC and will be able to continue to work with him, just on a different level. It truly has been a great honor working for him.”

Bonde has been a part of a successful RCTC men's program the past 10 years. The Yellowjackets have five Division III NJCAA Tournament appearances in that span, which has included three national runner-up finishes, a third place-finish and an eight-place finish.

"We are excited and thrilled to have coach Bonde take over the reins of the women's basketball program here at RCTC," Lester said. "His work and experience with coach LaPlante has prepared him to lead the Yellowjacket women to long-term success."

Prior to coming to RCTC, Bonde was on staff at Southwest Baptist University, in Bolivar, Mo., for two years where he also earned his masters in education. The Bearcats were 38-20 in that time and won a conference championship in 2007-2008. Bonde started his coaching experience after finishing his playing career at Bemidji State University as a student assistant that saw the Beavers reach a 20-10 mark and their first-ever 20-win season. Bemidji State was 14-2 in conference play that season, earning a berth to the NCAA Division II tournament. He also a degree in physical education at Bemidji.

Bonde also coached two years at the high school levels, one year at Rochester Century and one year at Pine Island.

He has a wife, Sara, and three girls ages 11, 6 and 2. He works full-time at RCTC and currently serves as the director of RCTC’s TRIO program.

Hucke had a 297-174 record as basketball coach at RCTC. That included a 34-0 record and an NJCAA national championship in 2008-09, when Hucke was named the NCAA Division III national basketball coach of the year.
