MINNEAPOLIS -- The Rochester Community and Technical College wrestling team had a strong showing this past weekend at the Augsburg Open, where 300 wrestlers from 20 different teams competed.
RCTC placed 10 wrestlers in the top six.
The Yellowjackets' Alex Lloyd went 4-0 in winning the 157-pound championship. Lloyd beat the No. 3-ranked wrestler in NCAA Division III in the finals, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's Grant Zamin.
RCTC's Seth Brossard went 3-1 in landing second at 165 pounds. He lost to the No. 1-ranked NCAA Division III wrestler, Ryan Epps of Augsburg, in the finals.
RCTC's Richie Hammonds wrestled unattached and went 4-0 in winning the 197-pound bracket. In the quarterfinals, Hammonds avenged his one loss of the season, beating Luther College's Donovan Com. In the finals, Hammonds beat Augsburg's Lorenzo Hernandez.
"All the guys wrestled well," RCTC coach Randy Rager said. "As a program, we aren’t looking at the wins and losses this early in the year. We are looking for guys who want to fight and aren’t going to quit on the mat. Our guys right now are fighters."
