Lourdes wins, but injuries mount

Rochester Lourdes is back on the winning track, but the injuries to key players continue to mount for the No. 19-ranked Eagles.

Tucker Chapman scored his second goal of the night 5:17 into overtime Thursday to lift Lourdes to a 5-4 boys hockey victory against New Ulm.

The victory was bittersweet for Lourdes, though, as it lost one of its top scorers, sophomore Mason Carstens, to what is likely a season-ending upper-body injury.

Montana Streit led Lourdes with two goals and two assists, Chapman had two goals and Carstens had a goal and an assist before suffering the injury.

"Tucker, Mason and Montana and Dakota (Streit) were really working hard again tonight," Lourdes coach Josh Spaniol said.

Spaniol said sophomore forward Peter Alexander, who had one assist on Thursday, will move up to the top line with Streit and Chapman.

"He'll be a very good player for us," Spaniol said. "He's smart with the puck and good on the penalty kill."

Jack Burkel made 19 saves for Lourdes (2-10-1), which plays at Delano on Saturday.

West edges Mayo on late goal

A battle of two Big Nine Conference unbeatens lived up to its hype.

Derek Frentz scored a short-handed goal with 27 seconds to go in the game, lifting Mankato West to a 2-1 victory against Rochester Mayo on Thursday at Graham Arena I.

Both teams entered the game without a loss in conference play. West, the No. 7-ranked team in the Class A state poll, is now 9-0-0 in the Big Nine and 12-2-0 overall. Mayo dropped to 5-1-0, 7-5-1.

The Spartans received a stellar effort in goal from senior Eric Gibson, who made 33 saves to keep his team in the game. Gibson dropped to 3-4-0 overall this season, but he has allowed just six total goals in his past three starts.

"It was a great game, a lot of up-and-down action," Mayo assistant coach Todd Huyber said. "Both teams had a lot of good chances. It was just a really good high school hockey game."

Anthony Oliveto scored for Mayo, his eighth goal of the season, with an assist from Austyn Renn.

Tyler Loe scored West's first goal.

MANKATO — Rochester John Marshall has started the new year in a positive fashion.

The Rockets received two points from three players and Brady Dahl's first varsity goal to seal a 3-1 Big Nine Conference boys hockey victory at Mankato East on Thursday.

JM (1-5-0 Big Nine, 3-9-0 overall) still has struggled to finish some of its opportunities, but the Rockets have done enough to win their first two games of 2014.

"We're starting to feel a little better" about how we're playing, JM coach Jay Ness said, "but scoring goals ... it's been the case all year. We put 42 shots on goal and scored (three) goals. We just have to keep getting better about finishing our scoring chances."

Cory Checco and Sam Broman scored in the second period for the Rockets, with East's Brad Johnson scoring in between, and JM led 2-1 after two. Checco and Broman also had one assist each and Jared Bromberg had two assists.

Dahl notched his first varsity goal late in the third period, scoring into an empty net.

JM outshot East (2-4-0, 4-9-0) 42-24. Patric Sadecki made 23 saves to record the victory for the Rockets.
