Macon, Trost are runners-up at state cross country
Riley Macon of Mayo took second place in the boys AA state cross county meet at St. Olaf College in Northfield Saturday.

NORTHFIELD -- A pair of area cross country runners made history for their programs at the state meet on Saturday at St. Olaf College.

Rochester Mayo's Riley Macon, a senior, finished as the Class AA boys state runner-up, the highest place ever for a Mayo runner at the state meet. Macon finished in 15:39.5, about 10 seconds behind champion Josh Thorson of Wayzata.

Macon's strong finish helped Mayo place eighth as a team -- their goal entering the meet was eighth -- with 197 points. Owatonna, which defeated Mayo at the Section 1AA meet, placed ninth with 226 points. Stillwater captured the team championship with 92 points.

Emi Trost, a sophomore from Cannon Falls, finished second in the Class A girls meet, marking the best finish for a Cannon Falls girls runner at state. Chatfield's Kayla Woltz placed fifth, giving the junior her fifth consecutive top-five finish at state. St. Cloud Cathedral won the team title, while Section 1A champ La Crescent placed ninth. Rochester Lourdes finished 15th, led by Camila Bedoya's 44th-place finish.

In the Class A boys race, Plainview-Elgin-Millville junior Pat Reinschmidt and Winona Cotter sophomore Matt Schrupp earned all-state honors. Reinschmidt placed 12th, in 16:34.0, and Schrupp finished 22nd, in 16:49.6. P-E-M finished 12th as a team, while Cotter placed 16th. St. Cloud Cathedral won the team title with 72 points, edging Perham by one point. Bryon Schuldt of Nevis won the individual championship, finishing in 15:55.3.

Austin High eighth-grader Madison Overby was the top area finisher in the Class AA girls race. She earned all-state honors by placing 20th, in 14:51.1. Maria Hauger of Shakopee captured her third consecutive state title, winning in 14:04.1. Monticello won the team title with 93 points, 25 ahead of Section 1A champ and state runner-up Lakeville South.
