Marathon training class begins next week

The 44th Marathon and Half Marathon, 10K, 5K Training Class sponsored by the Rochester Track Club and TerraLoco will begin soon.

The 44th Marathon and Half Marathon, 10K, 5K Training Class sponsored by the Rochester Track Club and TerraLoco will begin soon.

Those interested in training for half or full marathons or a 10K/5K event should attend an introductory meeting on Feb. 10 at 7:15 p.m. at TerraLoco (1190 16th Street SW, across from Apache Mall, near Trader Joe's).

The Spring Marathon Training Clinic will run through May 12. It is sponsored by the Rochester Track Club and TerraLoco.

Although this class is aimed at first-time marathoners/half marathoners/10K/5K runners and runners who haven't run for several years or who didn't have the type of experience they had hoped for in a previous races, anyone who might be interested in training for a spring event is welcome.

Among marathons this time of year: Med City (Rochester), Green Bay, Grandma's (Duluth), Voyageur (WI), Fargo, Brookings (N.D.), La Crosse, Eau Claire, Minneapolis, Lake Wobegon, There are also many half marathons, 10K and 5K runs, many of which are part of a marathon event as well.

The emphasis will be on first-time half/full marathoners, 10K, 5K runners, or those who have not run an event for sometime, and whose primary objective is to finish their event of choice, training up to 32-45 (marathoner) or 20-33 (half marathoner) miles per week.

Every Tuesday, there will be a one-hour session where a speaker will address such topics as nutrition, fluid replacement, preventing and coping with injuries, running shoes and clothing, plotting race strategies, foam rolling and stretching, mental preparation, a panel on "my first race," tapering and preparing for race day, and memories.

Longer runs will be programmed into the course with other short- to mid-distance runs. The long runs will be offered as a group activity, at your own pace, and will start and end at the Rochester Athletic Club.

The fee for the course is $50. That includes a clothing item, plaque, guest speakers, and a CD of handouts given to the participants during the three-month course. Participants DO NOT have to have membership in the Rochester Track Club.
