Mayo earns dramatic victory against Winona

Sarah Lisko threw a complete-game six-hit shutout and Rochester Mayo eked out a 2-0, eight-inning victory against Winona in a Big Nine Conference softball game on Tuesday at Mayo High School.

Lisko was sharp throughout, walking just one batter and striking out five.

The game was scoreless through seven innings, but Ashley Wandler was the offensive hero, belting a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth to end the game.

"It was a typical Mayo-Winona softball game," Mayo coach Steve Lewison said, "a one-run game played at a very high level and you never know which team is going to win."

Mayo managed seven hits against Winhawks pitcher Ashton Hoeppner, who struck out seven batters and walked two.

Sarah Westerland was the only Spartans player with more than one hit; she went 2-for-3.

"Our kids are playing very well right now. Hopefully they can enjoy this one (Tuesday) night," Lewison said.

Mayo plays at Rochester Century on Thursday.

Century shuts down JM

Rochester Century's softball team didn't waste any time in Tuesday's game against Rochester John Marshall. The Panthers scored twice in the first inning, then added six runs in the third inning and three in the fourth as they cruised to an 11-3 win.

"We gave them some extra chances, and they really took advantage with some nice hits," said JM coach Thang Nguyen. "Give them all the credit."

Century's Frankie Mickelson hit a two-run home run in the six-run third inning, and after an error kept the inning alive, the Panthers loaded the bases and got back-to-back doubles from Grace Henriksen and Abby Kartheiser. Henriksen finished with four RBIs.

Erin Ziebarth had three hits and an RBI for Century and also tossed a complete game, giving up 10 hits, no walks and striking out seven.

Abby Gee went 3-for-4 with an RBI for JM while Becca Herzog and Megan Karp both had two hits.

Century, now 6-4 overall, hosts Mayo on Thursday. JM, 5-6 overall, hosts Austin on Thursday.
