Meyer comes up big for RCTC again

AUSTIN — Aly Meyer worked close to the basket for her 14th double-double and led the Rochester Community and Technical College women's basketball team to an 85-78 road win over Riverland on Saturday.

Meyer, a six-foot freshman center from Caledonia, powered the Yellowjackets with 31 points and 14 rebounds. She made 9-of-10 free throws and also had three steals.

RCTC improved to 14-10 overall and 4-6 in the South Division of the MCAC Conference, with just two regular-season games remaining. The Yellowjackets need a win in one of their last two games to gain a spot in the MCAC state tournament.

The Yellowjackets had to come from behind to beat Riverland, erasing a 14-point deficit in the first half. Riverland still had a five-point lead at halftime.

"I thought our defensive intensity got stronger, got better in the second half," said RCTC head coach Steve Hucke. "We were more aggressive, and we shot better."

Sophomore guard Brittni Mayer had a strong game for Rochester with 22 points, including three three-pointers and 7-of-10 free throws. Desirae Lee, who played with Mayer at Dover-Eyota, had 12 points and six rebounds.

The Yellowjackets shot well, making 44 percent (24 of 55) from the field and 77 percent (33 of 43) from the line.

"It was just an all-around good, solid effort," Hucke said.

Rochester closes its regular season this week with a pair of home games, Wednesday against Fergus Falls, and Saturday against Anoka-Ramsey.
