MIESVILLE — Austin Greyhounds pitching ace Dave Meyer made his first mound appearance of the season on Tuesday night and went two innings in an 11-7 loss to the Miesville Mudhens.
Although Meyer gave up only one run in his brief outing on the hill, the Greyhounds never took the lead on the night. This led to a loss for Meyer in first game of the season. Pete Korfhage and Bryan Toov finished in relief.
The visiting Hounds trailed 4-0 in the top of the fourth, when they scored their first run of the night. Craig Braaten singled and Toov followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Braaten then scored on an error, but that was it for the rally.
"Dave pitched pretty well and it was nice to see him back on the mound," Hounds player/manager John Frein said. "We had a couple of guys thrown out on the bases early in the game and missed chances to score. We fell behind early, but made it a game with a couple of rallies in the later innings."
After the Mudhens scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-1 lead, the Hounds rallied in the top of the fifth with the long ball. Frein started the four-run rally with a walk, then Cano and Matt Raso followed with singles to load the bases.

Braaten next stepped up to the plate and delivered the big blow. He belted a grand slam home run over the left-field wall and the Hounds were back in the game.
Despite cutting into their deficit, the Hounds couldn't get over the top against the Mudhens. A run for the home team in the bottom of the sixth put the lead back at two runs. Once again, the Hounds rallied as Cano hit a solo homer in the seventh inning.
Four more runs by the Mudhens in the bottom of the seventh sealed the deal. In the top of the ninth, John Kirby and Raso drew walks to start the final rally of the night. Toov followed with an RBI single, but it wasn't enough to stave off defeat.
Greyhounds (10-10) play Stewartville on Thursday night at Marcusen Park. Next week's make-up game with the Rochester Royals will be played as part of a road doubleheader at Mayo Field a week from Saturday, July 31.
