The recent exploits of Minnesota Twins rookie outfielder Oswaldo Arcia, as well as the Twins having taken three of four games from the powerful Boston Red Sox, are reasons for optimism in Twins country.
It's early, but Arcia is looking more and more like the real thing with a bat in his hands. He homered and tripled in Thursday's 5-3 win, after collecting four hits the night before that. Arcia has hit safely in seven straight games and has batted a sizzling .424 on a 10-game road trip that just concluded.
And as a team, you have to like what you see from a franchise that was a disaster at this time last year. Minnesota was sporting an 8-23 record after 31 games in 2012. After Thursday night's win, it was one over .500 at 16-15.
Many, including me, predicted more misery for the Twins this season. But if guys like Arcia can continue to show promise, we may instead be in for a surprise.
