Mouthpiece: NASCAR bump and run

Clint Bowyer's pit crew pushes his car into the garage area after a crash with Jeff Gordon during thea NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race at Phoenix International Raceway on Nov. 11 in Avondale, Ariz.

I have never been a big NASCAR racing fan because I am not entertained by cars going around in circles really fast for two or three hours, no matter how brightly the cars are painted.

But I was amused by the video from last Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Phoenix, where veteran racer Jeff Gordon intentionally wrecked Clint Bowyer , and then a battle royale ensued in the pit area.

Bowyer arrived in the pits a bit late for the row, and several cameras followed his angry, awkward dash from his crumpled car to Gordon's trailer — where he was rebuffed presumably by Gordon's crew mates. It all had an all-star wrestling allure. Or maybe Benny Hill. That's the tune I heard in my head as Bowyer made his funny, fruitless jog.

I wonder if this show was orchestrated by a desperate NASCAR brain trust looking for any means possible to spark interest in their product again and prop up sagging track attendance.

Probably not. But it's a conspiracy theory.
