Mouthpiece: Quarterback controversy all over

Our local big-time football coaches face a couple of what appear to be easy decisions with their struggling quarterbacks.

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier has some extra time to "ponder" his quarterback decision. But really, is there a decision to be made? The Vikings finally won last week with Matt Cassel replacing Christian Ponder. The veteran Cassel was more accurate and clearly displayed more poise in the pocket.

Gophers coach Jerry Kill also has a quarterback controversy on his hands. Two weeks ago, Mitch Leidner replaced an injured Philip Nelson and led the Gophers to a great win over San Jose State. Nelson went back in last week and was bad in a disgusting loss to Iowa.

Now, both Frazier and Kill have voiced support for their "starters." For Frazier, that's ridiculous, and sticking with Ponder will cost him his job.

For Kill, it's a pivotal moment, too. It may not cost him his job, but it could cost the Gophers a bowl bid.
