Mouthpiece: Spartans have embraced underdog role

I've covered several fun postseason runs during my 13 years in the newspaper business. But what the Rochester Mayo baseball team accomplished over the last few weeks is truly remarkable, and the Spartans' postseason plight ranks among my all-time favorites.

Mayo entered the playoffs as the No. 6 seed. The Spartans went just 9-10 during the regular season, and there figured to be deeper and more talented teams seeded ahead of them in Section 1AAA.

But these kids embraced the underdog role.

In the very first game of the playoffs, Mayo was down to its final out, trailing Red Wing 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning. But the Spartans rallied twice to win in extra innings.

Now that's the definition of never giving up.

They went on to complete their dream run with Wednesday's win over Northfield.

They'll be the underdogs again next week at state. But hey, that's just the way the like it.
