The Twins were within three games of .500 in mid-June.
As up-in-the-air as the American League Central Division is, a team with a .500 record in early July would have every reason to believe it's in contention for a division title.
There's no reason for the Twins to believe that, however, especially after another embarrassing loss to the New York Yankees on Thursday. The loss at Target Field dropped the Twins 10 games below .500.
Baseball is a numbers game and the Twins' numbers are terrible, which means the club is likely headed for a third consecutive season with less than 70 victories.
Minnesota is 14th in the 15-team American League in home runs and 11th in batting average. The pitching staff is tied for 13th in team ERA, last in strikeouts and has the worst batting average-against in the league.
