New state strikeout record

AUSTIN — Despite seeing her season come to an end one game short of the Class A state softball tournament, it was still a banner playoff run for Hope Lutheran pitcher Felicia Meyer.

Midway through the first game at Todd Park on Wednesday night, which was a win over Rushford-Peterson, Meyer set a state record for strikeouts.

Meyer came into the game with R-P needing just five strikeouts to break the old record of 1,178. She got 15 in that game and added nine more in the finals against Blooming Prairie.

The new state mark is now 1,197 strikeouts, although it unofficially might be even more than that. Kevin Meyer, the head coach for Hope, said the records in her first year of varsity pitching (eighth grade) were a little spotty and might have included more whiffs from the opposition hitters.

"I didn't know how many strikeouts I had coming into the final day of the section tournament, but it's nice to own the state record," Felicia Meyer said. "It's just too bad we couldn't keep our season going. We kept the pitching routine the same for the finals. I tried to mix it up and just get my pitches over, but it didn't turn out to be our day."

Meyer had been the starting pitcher for Hope Lutheran over the last four seasons.
