Packers send three gymnasts to state

WINONA — A trio of individual gymnasts from the Austin Packers qualified for the Class A State Meet, but the the team couldn't repeat as section champions.

Pine Island unseated the Austin girls last weekend as champions of Section 1A. Last season, the Packers beat the Panthers for the title.

"We had a good day in the gym, but came up a little short," Austin coach Mark Raymond said. "We had a season high of 139.775, but it was not enough to beat Pine Island. They had a great day and won the tournament in the final rotation by going 36 on Beam. They looked good and deserved the section title."

Still, the Packers had another solid section performance and three girls advanced to the upcoming state tournament this weekend in Minneapolis.

Selena Hataye qualified for state in two events on Vault and Bars. Abby Bickler and Carolyn Hackel both made it to state for the Floor Exercises.

Bickler was the section champion with a first-place finish in the floor event. She had a score of 9.6 and is headed to state for the first time as an individual.
