Lourdes 55, Pine Island 43

ROCHESTER — Lourdes is moving on in the Section 1AA boys basketball tournament.

The eighth-seeded Eagles opened section play by defeating No. 9 Pine Island 55-43 on Thursday. The two Hiawatha Valley League rivals had split a pair of games during the regular season, with Lourdes winning 69-56 and falling 66-62.

Lourdes hosted Pine Island for a Section 1AA first-round boys basketball on Thursday, March 2, 2023.

The host Eagles played a strong first half and led 30-18 at the break.

Sam Theobald had a big game for Lourdes with 18 points. He entered averaging about 8.5 points per game. Parker Dunham, Lourdes' No. 2 scorer on the season, chipped in with 14 points, about 2.5 over his season average.

Blake Schiltz scored 17 points to pace Pine Island (8-19). He was one of three Panthers in double figures.

Lourdes (11-16) now has the tough task of facing top-seeded Lake City (25-1) in the Section 1AA quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Monday at Mayo Civic Arena.

Kenyon-Wanamingo 81, Schaeffer Academy 66

KENYON — Colton Steberg hit seven 3-pointers in the first half and finished with eight in the game as he tallied 26 points to spark No. 6 Kenyon-Wanamingo past No. 11 Schaeffer Academy 81-66 in the second round of Section 1A play.

With Steberg drilling triples in the first half, the host Knights (19-8) opened up a 48-26 lead at the break.

Zach Mason chipped with 16 points for K-W while AJ Higginbottom added 14.

Shaeffer Academy heated up from long range in the second half and both teams ended up with 13 3-pointers. Evan Miller had four 3-pointers and led the Lions with 18 points, Ethan VanSchepen hit three triples and had 16 points, Levi Ouren had two 3-pointers and 14 points while and Luke Friese hit four shots from beyond the arc for 12 points.

Schaeffer Academy finishes the season 16-11.
