ADAMS — Scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter put the Southland Rebels on top to stay and they went on to beat the St. Charles Saints in Friday night's football season opener.
Cody Kirtz scored the first touchdown of the season for the Rebels in the opening quarter. Kirtz ran it in from five-yards out and Lee DeHough added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
Nick Schmitz then started to gobble up yardage on the ground for the Rebels. Schmitz scored on a short run and on the next possession, broke off a 55-yard touchdown run. This made it a 20-0 lead in the first quarter for the home team at the Southland Athletic Field.
The visiting Saints took advantage of a few turnovers by the Rebels and got back in the game by halftime. St. Charles answered with a pair of touchdowns and cut the Southland lead to only 20-14 at halftime.
In the second half, the Rebels regained the momentum and stretched their lead. The Rebels scored a trio of touchdowns in the second half and DeHough added the extra points for a 41-14 win.
