OSE CREEK — Scoring runs hasn't been a problem this season for the Southland Rebels and they continued their hot hitting in Thursday's softball doubleheader at the Rose Creek City Park.
The only problem was the visiting Bulldogs of Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Kingsland scored one more run in the first game of the Three Rivers Conference doubleheader. GMLOK won a wild 17-16 game in the opener, then Southland came back to win 17-1 in the late game.
"We're scoring runs, but we made a few mental mistakes in the first game that need to be eliminated," Southland coach Greg Schulte said. "The girls came out in the second game and took care of business. We scored 11 runs in the second inning."
The Rebels committed six errors in the opener and that led to a loss for pitcher Brandi Schammel in the high-scoring affair. The defense played better in the second game and pitcher Jana Schammel won easily in five innings of mound work.
Putting together the big second inning rally, the Southland girls broke it open in the late game. Sarah Nelson and Lindsey Bottema each had two-out hits to score two runners in the inning. The Rebels finished with 23 hits on the day.

"Jana pitched well and only gave up three hits in the second game," Shulte said. "Our field was in good shape, but it was cold. After the tough loss in the first game, I was happy to get the split."
Southland (3-2 overall, 2-2 TRC) plays Dover-Eyota at home on Monday.
