Rebels win big in section opener

ADAMS — Dominating defense led the Southland Rebels to a 29-point win in Tuesday night's quarterfinals of the Class A, Section One football playoffs.

The Rebels defense had three interceptions and completely shut down the offense of the visiting Faribault Bethlehem Academy Cardinals. The Southland offense also produced a number of big plays en route to a 42-13 win.

In the first half, the Rebels defense was suffocating and they forced five punts from the Cardinals. The visitors had no first downs and no yardage gained for the first half.

"We wanted to play physical and it was a great team effort to get the win," Southland coach Shawn Kennedy said. "It's fun to watch our defense when they play like that. I really liked the way they swarmed to the football."

After using half of the first quarter on their opening drive and kicking a field goal, the Rebels added to their lead with an explosive second quarter. Mike Goergen caught a short pass from Jake Frodl out in the flat and sprinted past the defense for a 60-yard touchdown just 12 seconds into the second quarter.

Decker Bendtsen got the first interception for the Rebels midway through the second quarter. The defense repeatedly gave the offense a short field to work with and the turnovers led to points.

Tyler Kressin capped off a three-play drive with a 45-yard touchdown run. The Rebels later blocked a punt and Goergen scored on a 15-yard touchdown with just over a minute left in the first half.

"Bethlehem Academy has some good young kids and they came out ready to play," Kennedy said. "We were kind of lackadaisical in the first quarter, but then the ground game got rolling in the second quarter. The defense can't just key on one back and we utilized all of them. The rushing attack starts up front and running the ball is our signature on offense."

It also helps when the defense gets the offense the ball in the other team's territory. Ben Wolterman intercepted a pass on the second FBA possession of the second half and returned the pick 20 yards. This gave the offense the ball at the opposition's 35-yard line and they scored in two plays as Nick Schmitz scampered 31 yards for his first touchdown of the night.

More defensive pressure led to another third quarter touchdown for the Rebels. After the defense pinned the Cardinals inside their own 10, a shank punt into the wind gave the Rebels the ball only 20 yards from the end zone. Goergen capped off the short drive with his third touchdown.

The final points for the Rebels once again came courtesy of the defense. Wolterman picked off a pass in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter. This time, the Rebels got the ball at the FBA 40 and marched to paydirt. Schmitz scored his second touchdown and the Rebels were on their way to the section semifinals.

"We had good flow to the ball and played together on defense," Wolterman said. "Our coaches had a great gameplan and the line did a good job of creating pressure. I was just reading the keys on the quarterback and it put me in the right position to make a couple of interceptions."

Southland (7-2) gets the chance to avenge one of its losses on the season Saturday night against Fillmore Central in the Section 1A semifinals.
