Red Wing girls open tournament play Thursday

While the Red Wing boys basketball team continues to "go south" for its postseason action — including a berth in Friday night's Section 1AAA title game with Austin — the Red Wing girls will "go north."

Playing in Section 4 of Class AAA, the Wingers open play at home at 7 p.m. Thursday against Visitation of Mendota Heights.

Red Wing won the Section 1AAA girls basketball championship the last three seasons to earn trips to the state tournament. In 2013, the Wingers advanced to the state championship game, finishing as runners-up to De La Salle.

Realignment has Red Wing in a different section this time. Long-time Missota Conference rival New Prague (16-8) is there too, and is the No. 1 seed. Hill-Murray (17-9) is No. 2, Simley (19-7) No. 3, Visitation (11-13) No. 5.

The No. 4 seed, Red Wing is 7-19 overall but has lost 13 of its last 14 games.
