CENTURY

Outlook: The Panthers are off and running. Last Friday, they won the seven-team Plainview-Elgin-Millville Invitational with 170 1/2 points, finishing ahead of host P-E-M with 154. Austin Gray won the 100, Evan Eising the 409, Graham Massot the 3200, London Thurman the triple jump and the 1600 relay team of Gray, Ryan Alpers, Mikey Allen and Nate Larson. Earlier this year Thurman won the triple jump in the 16-team River Falls All-American Invitational at 44-6 and the high jump at 6-4.
Century has a 21 letterwinners who, according to coach Brian Purrington, are "ready to make a major impact. They have been with us for four years. Most of these guys came into the season having worked hard over the winter and it shows.''
The returning letterwinners accounted for 90 percent of Century's points at the Big Nine last year.
Nathan Larson is the top distance runner returning, having advanced to state last year in cross country.

Outlook: Young and improving. The Eagles have only five seniors, and three of them are out for track and field for only two seasons or less. Lourdes finished second in the subsection, for the first time in several years. Lourdes second year coach Jerome Garry said "with a nice, talented group of freshmen and sophomores, we hope to continue to improve and hopefully challenge for the subsection and section team titles in the very near future.''
Senior Reed Bjork returns in the 110 hurdles; he qualified for the state the past two years.
